Dead Faeries

Dead faeries being blown down empty streets
Lingering in clusters rolling up against the gutters

We abandoned the forest
So it abandoned us

Dead faeries being washed down rusty drains
Soggy matted wings clogging pipes and rotting in the water

We abandoned the magic
So it abandoned us

Dead faeries being swept from supermarket floors
Desiccated husks of nature’s despair trodden into dust

We abandoned the wonder
So it abandoned us

Dead faeries being washed from children’s watching eyes
Fading within their circles making way for paint and concrete

We abandoned the memory
So it abandoned us
